Gaslighting has become culturally pervasive, especially through social media. The term “gaslighting” was even chosen as the 2022 Word of the Year by Merriam-Webster Dictionary. Let’s delve into what it means and how it affects individuals and society1.

What Is Gaslighting?

  • Gaslighting is a psychological manipulation tactic used by narcissists and those in power. It aims to discredit the other person’s perception, making them feel confused, self-doubting, and even “crazy.”
  • For the gaslighter, this strategy allows them to create an alternate reality where they control the narrative.

Historical Origins:

  • The term “gaslighting” originated from the 1938 play “Gas Light” by Patrick Hamilton. It gained further prominence with the 1944 movie adaptation.
  • In the movie, a man deliberately dims the gas lights in their home while denying that they are dimming. His wife begins to doubt her own perceptions, leading to confusion and insecurity.

Psychological Impact:

  • Gaslighting involves prolonged manipulation, causing victims to question their own experiences and memories.
  • Victims become disoriented, insecure, and increasingly dependent on the gaslighter to validate their reality.
  • The power dynamic shifts, giving the gaslighter control over the victim.

Media Influence:

  • Social media platforms perpetuate gaslighting through tactics like conspiracy theories, trolls, fake news, and deepfakes.
  • Streaming services often include programming intended to influence social and political issues.
  • Media psychology helps us understand gaslighting’s mechanisms and its impact on personal, social, and political contexts.

Gaslighting undermines trust, distorts reality, and erodes our ability to think critically. Recognizing and addressing gaslighting is crucial for maintaining a healthy society.
